run into me at the 1998 Vancouver Indy Race.
my third year attending the race as a photographer. This year I was shooting stills with a 35mm Minolta.
The talk around the pits during the weekend was who was going to be in the accident in turn one this year.
their fastest before heavy breaking into the turn. That was the reason I was where I was. There was a
"Photographers Hole" by the apex of the corner where a large group of "Photogs" were congregating.
It was a small hole and a lot of lenses so I was on my knees leaning against the 2500lb concrete barrier,
behind a tire barrier (a state of the art safety precautions back then).
corner and ended up climbing up over Jimmy's tires and straight into the wall. There was only a fraction of a
second to see the accident and as I was ducking down behind the barrier I snapped a photo.
on to the ground. Still holding the camera up in the air. I was fortunate, a few of the other photographers
had theirs knocked about and splashed with water from the fire buckets as they all tried to back away. I didn't have far to fall since I was on the ground, my shoulder and hip snug against the concrete, as it pushed me over.
know what I had taken. I knew I took a picture but it was days before I could get it developed.
For the rest of the day I was a minor celebrity around the track. As I spent the rest of the race shooting
from other "holes" around the track where people continued to ask me about my part in the accident.
I had not seen any television replays as we were putting ourselves back together so I was in the dark
as to why all these people knew who I was.
which I jokingly put a small Band-aid over. It made a great prop to show people how much I was injured
after being run into by the two race cars.
About half way through the race I was back at turn one and a Medic came to me wanting to make sure
I was alright. He checked me out and released me. I really wish he had taken me to the Champ Car
Medical Truck, state of the art medical equipment, I would have loved to have seen it,
maybe take some pictures.
a quick photo, I sold a few unsigned copy's at the race that year and some more to friends at home. Come to think
of it, I found a couple of 11 X 15 inch unsigned prints I have left from the copy's I had made back then.
Anyone need one?? They are going fast!
