Spawning Salmon meet the Skutz Falls Fish Ladders
The Skutz Falls Fish Ladders were built to help the fish pass Skutz Falls on the Cowichan River. When the fish are spawning up river Native Fishermen are allowed the take fish for their food fisheries. Even the Great Blue Heron knows the falls are to be a great place to net or spear or grab the fish.
Vancouver Island Motor Gathering
The public was invited to it's first viewing of the Vancouver Island Motor Circuit and one of it's Motor Gatherings. The Gain Motor dealers opened their gates to car enthusiasts wanting to show off their rides to raise money for the David Foster Foundation and the Cowichan District Hospital Foundation. Cars of all shapes and sizes ringed the track for hundreds of visitors to view. Lambo's, Benz's, Fords, and Chevy's even Subaru's, not mine though.
Raul Malo and The Mavericks at Butchart Gardens, Victoria
Butchart Gardens seems an unlikely place for a band to start a cross Canada tour but that is a where The Mavericks performed Wednesday night (Aug 3, 2016) to a large crowd of enthusiastic fans.
Lead singer and guitarist Raul Malo's unmistakeable baratone voice has been the signature sound for the Mavericks for 25 years. His voice has been compared to that of Roy Orbison, one of his childhood influences. The band's latin influences come from Malo, the son of immigrant Cuban parents.
In 1989 he formed the band in Miami, playing along side punk and alternitive bands he created his own country, folk, pop and Latin styles then moved to Nashville to record their first album "From Hell to Paradise" in 1991. Raul Malo and the Mavericks combining neotraditional country music, Latin, and rockabilly influences promised that the laid back audience would be up on their feet dancing before the show ended. Promise kept.
The band consists of Raul Malo, Eddie Perez, Paul Deakin, Jerry Dale McFadden, Robert Reynolds, Ben Peeler and David Lee Holt.
If you have not heard of the Mavericks do yourself a favor and check out one of their multi-platinum recordings - The Mavericks, From Hell to Paradise, What a Crying Shame, Music for All Occasions, Trampoline, In Time, or their newest release Mono.
