New years Eve in a small community tends to be a family affair everyone knows each other and can let their hair down and party. The Youbou Community Hall is the place that friends celebrate the ending of 2013 and the start of 2014.
At the LSC Annual History Fair, Jan 10, teacher Ms Hartshorn is enjoying Justine Carlow's presentation of climate change, "more and more every year we see technology based presentations along with the hands on" Hartshorn says, "I am overwhelmed every year with all the effort they put into their projects." For History Day Robyn Versceege wrote and sings her presentation about the CPR Railway.
Crystal Bell has a very interactive History Fair presentation about some thing her father taught her when she was younger. Her topic, Wrestling and Boxing. Max Baird and Crystal arm wrestle while others could leg wrestle on the mats provided.
At the Tourist Info Centre Katheryn Worsley from the chamber of commerce holds up the Citizen of the Year award. If you are chosen winner this year you may be commemorated on a brand new plaque since this one is full.
January 18 Victoria Pugel, Jim Foss, Dorian Pugle and Kristle Nowlin pose happly in front of the 1948 Speeder/Crummy that will soon be an outside eating area next to their restaurant. The family rescued the railway speeder from its resting place it the forest just outside Lake Cowichan and were committed to refurbish the car to its former glory. The project was completed by the summer and added a great tourist attraction to the downtown area. J&V's restaurant is located on South Shore Road in Lake Cowichan.
In late 2013 the Lake Cowichan Volunteer Fire Department received their new rescue boat and Rapid Deployment Craft. The LCVFD members needed to be trained to operate their newest pieces of rescue equipment so on a cool January weekend. Swift Water Rescue trainers from Raven Rescue of Smithers BC were hired to teach the members water rescue and boat control in flowing rivers.
Fire Chief Doug Knott states "No training, no boat" so all the members are spending time to learn boat techniques for river and lake rescues. Members have also been taught safe operation of their jet boat on Lake Cowichan.
Craig Gerrard from Raven Rescue, "We are training them in all disciplines of rescue, swift water, technical rope rescue, ice rescue, as well as operating the Jet Boat safely."
At Little Beach on the Cowichan River the firefighters were suited up in their Stanfields and survival suits to act as victims and rescuers as they practiced a multitude of different rescue scenarios.The VFD's jet boat and the Yellow Rapid Deployment Craft were used to assist swift water rescuers in performing these tasks.
With a roaring fire on shore to warm up by the firefighters were eager to be in or out of the water.
At the kick off the The Kaatza Lakeside Players Spring production of L Frank Baum's Classic The Wizard of Oz we were introduced to a talented singer Lynnea Bruce. She was chosen play the lead role of Dorothy in this years production.
Producer Lily Laird states of their lead singer Lynnea "she has an incredible singing voice, a play like this wouldn't work if someone with a strong voice like hers wasn't in that role."
Saturday friends and family members were invited to hear two of the classic songs from the show "Off to see the Wizard" and "Somewhere over the Rainbow".
Lake Cowichan Lakers Hockey teams at the 2014 Lakers Jamboree. Stick Handling was one of the four skills tested in the skills competition that was a fun competition between the reds and the blues. The Shoot Out NHL style gave the goolies a good work out in the end the Lakers Blues out shoot White 8 - 6. The blues team won the trophy in this fun event

Canadian Flags and red toques filled the gymnasium as the students at Palsson celebrate the opening day of the 2014 Sochi Olympics.
Principle Jann Drake opened the assembly with these words "The Olympic games demonstrate fair play, pursuit of excellence, leadership, respect, healthy active living and perseverance". She then introduced former two time Paralympian, Lake Cowichan resident Gordon Tuck and Councillor Tim McGonigle, a Paralympic Torch Runner in the 2010 Vancouver Games. Both then marched into the Gym Olympic style led by torch bearer McGonigle.
Councillor Tim McGonigle, Olympic Torch in hand, spoke to the kids about how exciting it was to run in Vancouver with the torch and how coaching young men and women playing electric wheelchair hockey taught him to look at life differently. The kids were more than excited to hold the Olympic Torch themselves.
Eighteen Lake Cowichan students have started the beginner Classes for 5 - 12 year olds. The classes are being taught at the upper Centennial Hall starting Feb 7 to March 7 Students will train 45 minuets each Friday for five weeks. The classes teach students the basics of karate, a martial art that at its heart teaches that non violence is the preferred method of solving issues.
Skating on Mayo Lake is a treat that doesn't come often with our temperate climate but when it does you'll find lots of people that want to take advantage of it.
Winter has provided us with an impromptu tourist attraction just off Highway #18 near the Skutz Falls turn off. A leaking plastic water hose, used by nearby residents, has made a large frozen statue/icicle in the surrounding trees. At times there are 10 - 15 cars parked on the side of Highway #18.
While in Youbou, Coon Creek freezes over as water continues to run down the mountain beneath the temporary casing. Winter also brings the shovelling of the white stuff for Lake Cowichan resident Don Willis spends part of his BC Family Day shovelling the little bit of snow from his sidewalk, making it safer for his neighbours to walk in Lake Cowichan.
Odhin Rowe nails it as his brother Hunter Rowe exits the bindings on his board, anyone got another ski for him? Hunter and his friends Josh Monti, Ruby Bragg and Chris Rowe are having fun in the snow at the school grounds in Youbou Sunday.
What would winter be without a snowman.
At the Valley Fish and Game Club Cronin shows what may be the largest set of Roosevelt Elk antlers found in BC. Cronin found these "pick up" antlers and skull in the Caycuse area. The measurement on this huge rack was 296 and if found to be the largest will be listed in the Boone and Crocket Club Record Book. Saturday the club had officals from Nanaimo in to measure antlers for inclusion in the Boone and Crocket Record Book.

The Lakers then won their next game against the Sooke Thunderbirds and eventually ended up 6th in the tournament.
Lots of activity at the CICV Radio Station behind the Lake Cowichan School. The Valentines Weekend Marathon from Friday 6pm to Saturday 6pm is raising money for the station. In the past week Shaw TV and today CTV News have stopped by to do stories on 98.7 FM "The Lake". Saturday afternoon Darryl Scott Alsbrook dropped into CICV radio station to play some live music while David Gordon is on air.

RCMP Inspector Ray Carfantan from the North Cowichan Detachment keeps an eye on the search in the SAR Incident Command Vehicle. A possible crime and kidnapping is the reason the police are involved.
Patty Abbott, Team leader/planning officer with Cowichan Search and Rescue checks with searchers to plan areas to send the teams.
Once a lost and injured camper is found the rope rescue team is sent in. Lyn Edmondson, a rope rescue team member with Juan de Fuca Search and Rescue hangs off the side of the cliff at Maria Canyon as he brings the rescue basket down to the shore of the Cowichan River. The Search and rescue by the river team loads the injured person into the basket and Edmondson brings it back up to safety.

The Cowichan Skating club had their production of the popular movie "Grease", the musical on ice March 7 at the Cowichan Arena.
Along with the Cowichan Skating Club Coach and Choreographer Lorraine Francisty is also featured the Duncanettes, the synchronized skating team from Duncan to skate in the performance.
Almost all of the 50 skaters in club will be on the ice doing their jumps and spins to the 50's Rock and Roll music.
In the lead roles are Brooklyn Kruk as "Rizzo" and Morgan Shyshka playing "Sandra Dee".
Cowichan Rocks president Mike Waller's gets ready to Rock at the 2014 International Tankard at the Cowichan Lake Curling Rink, March 8, 14. Piper Frank Nichol leads the RCMP, the Royal Canadian Legion colour Guard and the 48 Curlers from Canada and the USA in the Opening Ceremonies of the 2014 International Curling Tankard.
The Tankard has been in Lake Cowichan two times now, a favourite destination for the curlers from Canada and the US Pacific Northwest.

Twenty Youbou residents listened to Frank Limshue and Sue Handle from TimberWest as they explained how they chose the site at the west entrance to Youbou for the new Truck Wash. Overall negative concerns were voiced by a few residents who requested to speak at the April 8, 14 meeting at the Youbou Hall.
About 100 people attended the Grad '14 Fashion Show Friday night helping raise $800 (at the door) to be donated this year to John Hieta and his family to help them get to Toronto to receive a lung transplant.
Maddison Wirth takes first place in the kids devision for the Valley Fish and Game's Fish Derby with her .57 pound trout. Maddy's prize was a lifejacket.
Ray Bishop fires his cannon to signify the end of the 7th Annual Valley Fish and Game Memorial Fish Derby and Pig Roast, Ray has been shooting his Citrus Cannon for the last 20 years at Club events like this. For the little ones the Valley Fish and Game Club had an Easter Egg Hunt on Sunday Morning. The egg hunt was part of the 7th Annual Valley Fish and Game Club's Fish Derby held Easter weekend, April 18th to the 20th.

The 2013-2014 Lake Royalty bids farewell at the Grand Ball, their reign almost over, except for the crowning of the new Lady of the Lake and her Princesses Saturday afternoon at Lake Days.

In the Build Bail and Sail competition this was the closest thing to a race. Lasting another 30 seconds before the boat on the right folded in half and sank.
From the Lake Days Parade,the Royal Canadian Legion Pipe Band and the Youbou Volunteer Fire Departments Vintage Studebaker Tanker #2 it won a First place ribbon in the Lake Days Parade.

Honeymoon Bay Volunteer Fire Fighter Janice Shand displays a custom painted firemens helmet, just one of the many auction items for sale to raise money for Muscular Dystrophy Canada. The auction is part of the Mesachie Group firemens Baseball tournament held on Fathers Day weekend in Mesachie Lake. Island Firefighters raise money all year long to bid lavishly on donated items at the auction. This painted helmet went for $500, a custom painted BBQ brought in $7500.

Duaine Hardie, Fish Culturists at Vancouver Island Trout Hatchery, brought 50 small Trout for the kids to release into Mayo Lake. The Fresh Water Fisheries Society of BC has released 200 trout into the lake this month in preparation for BC Family Fishing Day.

Nathan Major was presented the award "For the Love of Ball" at Monday nights Awards banquet for the Lake Cowichan District Minor Baseball Assoc. The award is presented to the player in the Mosquito division that showed the most sportsmanlike behaviour throughout the season. Lake Cowichan's PeeWee Lakers were awarded the "Most Sportsmanlike Team" while playing at the Chris Fenton Memorial Tournament in Chemainus earlier this season. The award is given by the umpires to the team that showed the most respect to the umpires and their calls.

The last day of High School for these former LCS students was 35 years ago, "that's back when Robin Rooke rode his motorcycle through the halls of the school.". Today these 21 Class of 1979 graduating students return to Lake Cowichan to tour the school and catch up with each other. The Grad class photo hangs in the school.

The BC Day Long weekend combined with a portion of the 30,000 concert goers at Sunfest made the long weekend the busiest ever for Lake Cowichan. By noon on Saturday morning both tube rental outfits had rented all of their tubes and were taking reservations for the afternoon after the first run of tubers returned.
The Court family of Youbou enjoy the pancake and egg breakfast at the Youbou Volunteer Fire Hall to start the Youbou Regatta Saturday morning.

This years Cowichan River clean up in Lake Cowichan was a success, if by success you mean they didn't find much garbage in the river.

Diana Gunderson, acting president of the Cowichan Lake River Stewardship Society is happy with this years turnout of volunteers, and with the small amount of garbage being pulled from the river.
Mitchel Flynn, Gearld Thom's nephew, was cooking on the BBQ, to help feed the volunteer crew after the clean-up. That was one of the duties his uncle liked to do for the volunteers at a lot of the CLRSS work parties.
Susan Simmons readies herself to enter the water while safety boats are organized for the 30+ hour trip. Simmons and friend Alex Cape are swimming the length of Cowichan Lake twice to bring awareness to Multiple Sclerosis a disease Simmons was diagnosed with 20 years ago. Kayakers and Safety Boats will accompany them on their 70km swim, the length of Cowichan Lake and back. A volunteer crew of 70 will be working alongside to keep the swimmers safe.

Ohtaki Dinner at Centennial Hall. Ohtaki visitors Mitsuki Takayama, Nonoka Fujita with Camika Bell, one of the students to visit Ohtaki in 2015, at the wonderful buffet served at Centennial Hall on Tuesday evening. Dinner and entertainment was arranged for the delegates, visitors and families on their last evening in Lake Cowichan.

Honeymoon Bay hosted an Island Carpet Bowling Tournament. The team of Carolyne and Gordon Austin from Honeymoon Bay and Joyce and Fred Luecke from Port Alberni won gold. They beat seven other teams from coming from Port Alberni to Victoria for this one day tournament.
Dave Coles from Nanaimo measures the distance between the bowls to determine which team scores the point.
Guy Patton, on the Honeymoon bay team, bowls his bowl as teammate Dick Orman and opposing team member Bert Lambert decide the placement of the bowls.
The Crafty family, Joyce Rodger, Debbie Billings and Janace Hill, vendors at the Honeymoon Bay Craft Fair for years. So popular is the craft fair visitors Loretta Rithlier and her son William have come over from Saltspring Island to buy some of the home made items for Christmas.

Upstairs Ian and Adele Halowaty with the Youbou Community Association are having a membership drive. They are hoping to interest Youbou residents in joining other likeminded locals to tackle issues like the need for a Truck Wash/dust control, Road safety /speed control or garbage control in the area.
The kids are raising money to go to Ohtaki Japan Lake Cowichan's sister City.

Sunday morning saw the opening of the Lake Cowichan Christian Fellowship Church at their new location on King George St. On hand for the dedication service with Pastor Terry Hale were Tom & Delcy Anderson, Kande Hale, Bev Parsons and Keynote speaker Pastor Ken Russell, District Superintendent of the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada.
